Scripture Union Daily Guide 15th April 2026 – Today’s Devotional
Topic: Christian, seek not yet repose!
Opening Prayer
Help me to understand the exceeding greatness of your power as I read through this passage, dear Lord.
Meditation Question
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
Read vs. 1–3 again. Take note of the lineage of Ishmael and how he carried out a murderous mutiny against Gedaliah and his brethren. One would not expect a person of his family and religious background to think of such heinous evil against his own people at a time of very severe affliction. Do you think such barbaric acts of wickedness happen in churches and Christian ministries today?
Was it possible for Gedaliah to have prevented this attack? See 40:13–16. What can we learn from this as Christians in leadership? While we put strong security around ourselves, and trust in God’s protection, we must not be careless. We have been commanded to watch and pray (Matthew 26:41). Gedaliah was careless. He took no step to strengthen his defence even after he was given privileged information about Ishmael’s evil plans. His carefree attitude caused him avoidable death.
Read vs. 11–18 and identify more deeds of wickedness done by Ishmael. He did all these and still escaped justice. All these happen to God’s people because they chose to remain in the land when God wanted them out of it. This looks like the warning in John Bunyan’s “Christiana’s Pilgrim Progress”, to flee the City of destruction to the Celestial City.
So what? Do not be over-confident, do not trust anyone too much as to neglect watchfulness or God’s warnings.
